Guide to Buying LED Lighting

Why are you changing your lighting to LED?

When you make the decision to change your lighting to LED there are a number of things that you need to decide before taking the plunge.  The main question to ask is; what is the purpose of this change and why is LED your preferred option?

There are 3 main reasons that most people consider the driving force to changing to LED.

What costs are involved in changing to LED lighting?

LED lighting is often considered a high initial capital expense over other older technologies, which in most instances is completely correct.  With this in mind, the majority of people converting to LED shop around to try and reduce the initial costs of the upgrade as low as possible.

However, the relatively small cost savings at the start of the project can mean considerably more expense later on in running costs, lack of light output and general hassle factor.

Remember the initial driving force to changing to LED!!!

What do I need to look for when shopping for LED lighting?

Obviously, the initial upgrade cost is important; you do not want to be paying a considerable amount more on equivalent product or on a brand name.  What you do need to look for is a good balance between initial outlay and the energy you will be using (or saving) going forward.  This is known as the return on investment (ROI) and full lifecycle savings.

You do not want to be paying £20 less for a product that is going to cost £18 a year more to run over the 10 year life of the luminaire.  Neither do you want to spend £15 less on a light that is going to give out half the lumens of what you currently have installed.

Always compare the wattage and quality BEFORE the cost of the product.  You need to know how much this new light is going to cost you when it is installed as much as, if not more than, how much it is going to cost in the first place.

The cost of electricity is currently on an upwards trend and isn’t forecast to decrease in the coming years making this even more important.

I am still not sure what the above means?

We have produced the tables below to help illustrate the misconceived idea that the cheaper you can buy the product, the better off you are!

This table is based on the return on investment of replacing a 600x600 false ceiling luminaire (4 x 18w T8) with an LED panel running 24/7 at 10p per kW/h

Now that we have the return on initial investment of the product, we need to look at the running costs of the product during its lifespan and ultimately see how much energy/money can be saved.

Do we only save on the energy when we convert to LED technology?

The energy saving aspect of converting to LED is a huge factor but this is not the only benefit.

With an average rating life span of 50,000 hours, LED luminaries, if running non-stop for the duration of their life, will last at least 5.75 years. This is compared to 10,000 hours (1.12 years) on a T8 fluorescent fitting.

With this in mind, you can forget about the cost of the replacement bulbs themselves along with the man hours taken to complete the change.  This may seem a small part of the cost of running the lamps but it mounts up considerably over the life of a LED fitting.

Should I buy a directly imported Chinese Product or from a UK Manufacturer?

The key to this is ‘are they a UK manufacturer?’.

There are a lot of companies currently acting as ‘middle men’ selling relabelled Chinese product to UK companies.  Buyers must be aware that, although there is some very good product being supplied direct from China, there is substandard product as well.

We have tested numerous lighting fittings over the last 3 years and our experience tells us that they can fall into the following categories.

1.   Very good product that does exactly what it claims.

2. Acceptable product but either higher powered than it needs to be or under performing where lumen output is concerned.

3.   Damn right dangerous!  Does not conform to any western electrical regulations.

Without a reliable filter in the UK you could be buying from any of the 3 categories above and, unfortunately, law of averages says it is more than likely to be in the bottom two!

At Luminos, although we source component parts from the far east, all parts are supplied to our design and assembled here in the UK to ensure that the product not only gives out the light they should, they are the lowest powered lights available on the market (LED Panels and down lights) and, most importantly, they are safe for use and comply to European standards!

In addition to this, we have our own lighting test facilities which allows us to test every product. This gives us, the manufacturer, the confidence that the lights perform as they should and you, the consumer, the peace of mind that you are getting exactly what you want.

If you are still determined to buy Chinese product direct or through a middle man, here are some of the questions that need asking.

If you’re still unsure, please give our office a call and one of our lighting experts will tell you everything you need to know. Alternatively, use our contact form  to get in touch.
